Need a development platform

I have downloaded bochs and have vmware and have easy access to XEN and many others like UML are also available. But I need a tutorial for understanding how to use latest kernel and not the old images for working on patches and compilations without destroying my disk and installations.

Anybody has a clue? Sir Mr. MMA you must have some idea becoz u’ve been through development in the past.

  1. I am trying XEN becoz its related to the security trend! Hope its easy to adjust with. Its easy to install because all I have to install is a Xen based kernel which is included in the dvd image. Next is configuring the guest OS that is the real part.

  3. one thing I have come across is that xen gives problem with Xserver. X does not start. I think X server has problems with domain0. Lets see what I can do to it.

  5. The problem of X server seems to be very serious. I think its to do with vga drivers conflicting with xen. I am really messed up now so taking a long brake!

  11. I would appreciate if someone can let me know how to understand and handle the patch technology. Both using and creating patches.

  13. I got the patch thingy. It is used with diff and is a smart utility but still would appreciate some more details.

  15. Well if I patch my system then my sources get patched (kernel). Then I compile my kernel. Fine. What about next time? For another patch which is not incremental do I need a fresh kernel source?

  17. Erm.. sorry if this is a stupid question but what’s wrong with VMWare. I know XEN would be a better option but what’s wrong with installing stuff on VMWare. It’s a little slow for GUI but it’s easy to handle and recycle-able.

  23. i think its better you post questions on the blog as wel as on the corresponding mailing lists as wel… for example you can put this PATCH quesiton on the linux kernel mailing list as u are already a member of the mailing list. you can find more and quick help from other sources as wel… m not discouraging putting questions on the blog rather i appriciate the work but the suggestion is only for saving your time… :)

  25. U r right sirjee but the kernel people dont like to be bothered with such childish questions and they will tell u the answer and also to try the kernel-newbie mailing list for a while.
